Use for: Licorice has been used for gastric and duodenal ulcers, stomach pain, mouth ulcers, chronic gastritis, dyspepsia, Helicobacter pylori infection and cholestatic liver disorders.
Concerns: Licorice is mostly safe in appropriate doses for short-term. Long-term use may cause hypertension, hypokalemia or pseudoaldosteronism. Its estrogenic and steroid effects may cause risks on pregnancy. Avoid using on pregnancy and lactation.
Licorice may decrease immune and inflammatory response against COVID-19 with little evidence.
Licorice is contraindicated in people with liver disorders, severe kidney insufficiency, hypokalemia, cardiac problems, hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Consult with health care provider on Licorice use consideration.
